10.20 – kwik cricket ‘taster’ matches – round 1 with SLEP Head Coach – Andy Curzon

[may run second match with Matt Curzon depending on ages wishing to participate]

11.15 – cricket quiz [mainly for the youngsters] – main pavilion – with quizmaster Andy Curzon.

12.00 – official opening – main pavilion – Michael Hopkins [chair] with guests Jessica Lee MP, Mike Gatting, Denise Amiss, David Leighton [ECB] , Richard Lightbown [ECB], Mick Glenn [DCB], Neil Birkitt [DCB], Councillor Bill Camm [Erewash & Derbyshire County Council] and others.

12.20 – tour of event by special guests – with club ambassadors – junior members.

12.20 – autograph hunt – including meeting Freddy the Falcon the mascot of Derbyshire CCC.

12.30 – kwik cricket ‘taster’ matches – round 2 with SLEP Head Coach – Andy Curzon

[may run second match with Matt Curzon depending on ages wishing to participate]

1.00 – Special ‘test stars’ activity – preparing surround for practice net construction.

1.30 – junior montage construction – main pavilion.

2.30 – hanging of ‘cricket artwork’ prepared by Wilsthorpe Secondary School.

3.00 – Super Prize Draw – Arthur Winfield – main pavilion

4.00 – event closes

5.30 – event car park closes on Wilsthorpe Road.

Other activities.

Y8 Wilsthorpe School – producing a DVD record of the event – including interviews with volunteers, supporters, partners and guests.

Coming to a park near us soon – a community event.

NatWest CricketForce@Sawley & Long Eaton Park is far more than several building projects the club has wanted to complete for some time.

It will see numerous local community groups not only working together but also enjoying themselves.

Wilsthorpe secondary school will have a group of Y8 students filming the event for a DVD record of the day while students from their Expressive Art group will be hanging cricket artwork in the refurbished pavilions prepared before hand in the school.  Nottingham Trent University Media students will be recording interviews with volunteers, event partners and guests including Freddy the Falcon the mascot of Derbyshire CCC.

 David Dooley the event organiser commented, ‘over 20 organisations will make a contribution to this event from the national company Lafarge donating 20 tonnes of road stone aggregate, to a regional builder Westerman Homes sending us 3000 bricks to the local baker Adkins providing 60 dozens rolls.

Teams of volunteers are expected from the local DHL branch and Wilkos who are likely to be painting the social areas of a pavilion while NatWest employees will be assembling two sight screens and a mobile practice cage bought with the aid of a Sport England grant.

The hospitality area is being organised by 3^rd Long Eaton scouts, who are bringing two marquees, while the refreshments themselves are being served by the 4^th Attenborough Brownies who hope to complete their hostess badge on the day. The local Tesco store has kindly donated the majority of the refreshments being served on the day.

 Junior volunteers will be also be busy enjoying taster kwik cricket matches, participating in the autograph hunt, practising their cricket skills on the England Cricket Board’s Fun Factory while also acting as ambassadors showing guests such as former England cricketers Mike Gatting and Dennis Amiss around the event.

Councillor Bill Camm said, ‘it is great to see so many community organisations coming together to not only refurbish the cricket club’s facilities but enhance the environment of  Long Eaton’s showcase municipal park’.

The club is having a genuine makeover with a new female changing room, new kitchen, hopefully brand new pavilion furniture and even new cutlery and crockery for club match teas. And how does the rubbish leave West Park?

Hot news - club member now believes in miracles!

Extract from David Dooley's opening remarks at the NatWest CricketForce@Sawley & Long Eaton Park CC Progress Meeting at West Park Leisure Centre on 10th February 2011.

'Last  Sunday at practice I asked a 3rd XI player was he looking forward to the coming season. The reply was somewhat unexpected - 'not if it is like last season and certainly not at home'.

He recounted - 'no electricity, no hot water, changing and eating tea in the dark in a pavilion with no natural light. And outside things were no better - the balustrade on the viewing veranda seemed to disappear piece by piece as the season progressed until the roof began to subside. Even on the pitch things did not improve with only one sight screen - as one had been commandeered by the 1st XI - and the remaining was bent as if in homage to the players'. Perhaps the sight screen had it right.

He finished despondently - 'I wonder what impressions visiting teams took away with them, and would parents want to bring their youngsters to such an environment to learn their cricket skills'.

I said to him,' if you invest just £20 in the club all those issues and more could be adressed'. He replied, 'I don't believe in miracles'. But NatWest CricketForce is probably going to deliver that miracle at the club.

A restored electricity supply, enlarged and decorated social area with two UPVC viewing windows, a restored balustrade in brick with security grill protection and two new sight screens and more - an enlarged patio at a newly decorated inside/outside main pavilion, a ramp to our store room, a three pitch rain cover and a mobile net for us to use on our grass wickets or the newly installed non-turf pitch.

In fact if we take the estimated value of the work being undertaken by NatWest CricketForce and divide it by the club membership of 150 [65 seniors and 85 juniors] - then each member is benefiting from £400 of investment - for a £20 contribution - a fantastic return. And in fact that £20 can be invested in the NatWest CricketForce Super Prize Draw [see club secretary Arthur Winfield] with the potential to win a holiday in the Mediterranean.

It was no surprise when my 3rd XI friend said, 'perhaps NatWest CricketForce really does deliver miracles'.

A remarkable 10 ten days for the club and its members & supporters.

When Chairman Michael Hopkins accepted the England Cricket Board's invitiation to become the NatWest CricketForce Midlands Showcase Club 2011 - it was a bold decision but based on his faith the members had the enthusiasm and expertise to make it work and that the local community would respond to the 'call to action'.

Well, the last ten days must have encouraged him to think he made the right call - key partners have agreed 'in kind' contributions. Westerman Homes with 3000 bricks, Lafarge with 20 tonnes of aggregate, Dulux Decorating Centres with £500 of materials and Henshaw Builders of Ilkeston with 120 pressed concrete paving slabs.

While at the same time he has seen the membership engage in the event with over 20 members completing the sponsored walk, clearing the main pavilion for the Derby College decorating team and discussing our needs with partners.

Now - the immediate task is to organise the delivery of these contributions to West Park and then focus on recruiting 'volunteers' to help us on our Big Day - 10th April 2011.

Things are beginning to happen

The NatWest CricketForce Sponsored Walk took place on 2nd January when 13 members walked 10 miles along the River Trent raisning around £800 rewards our event plans.

Then on 6th January another 13 members descended on the main pavilion to prepare for the arrival of Derby College and their painting and decorating team. Everything was taken off the walls - hopefully the social area, dressing rooms, disabled toilet and kitchen will soon look splendid.

But it has not been all good news - with the local ASDA store being unable to support the club - next stop the local Tesco store or maybe approach ASDA Head Office via the England Cricket Board [ECB] - after all they are the national sponsors of Kwik Cricket.

Received a copy of Witham CC NWCF newsletter – looked very similar to our format. Looks like taking a different approach – with some ambitious plans and a much greater emphasis on fund raising. Major fund raising and seeking in kind materials a difficult call! So far we have raised or have pledged £1175 – we are putting our faith in ‘in kind’ donations – but our plans perhaps do not need so much cash. Intend to approach Rotary Club for a small grant - £225 – towards DVD production – use a contact generated by launch meeting.

FREE junior membership of Derbyshire CCC for volunteers

Had some good news as we approach Christmas – a variety of small donations and gifts in kind received. Erewash Sports Community Network awarded club £375 towards female dressing room refurbishment, Smart Kitchens agreed to supply new kitchen for GD Pavilion, Wilko happy to supply new crockery for the GD Pavilion and a vice president donated £195 to the event. No news of the  really big ‘in kind’ request from Lafarge and Westerman Home Builders.

Derbyshire CCC going to offer FREE junior membsership to all U12s attending NatWest CricketForce@Sawley & Long Eaton Park CC - over 50 days of top class cricket

FREE membership includes all T20 divisional matches

Used play cricket database to promote NWCF sponsored walk – although does seem difficult to motivate membership. Agreed with DCB to have a second meeting probably on the 10th February 2011 – invitations to be sent out week commencing 11.01.2011 with RSVP by 24.01.2011 and then to follow up with phone call. Have about 260 people on play cricket database with only about 40 with no valid email address – slowly being reduced. Should be quite well healthy when used to issue email invitations in January.
